René Ramos Premier

BASS - BARITONE

Originally from Santiago de Cuba, René Ramos Premier began his musical studies at the age of eight as a pianist. He later trained in choral conducting and musicology at the Esteban Salas Regional Music Conservatory in Santiago de Cuba. Passionate about singing, he pursued further training as an operatic vocalist at the Higher Institute of the Arts (ISA) in Havana. There, he participated in numerous concerts and festivals, notably with the prestigious National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba, the early music ensemble Ars Longa, and the professional Vocal Leo Choir, an association that led to international engagements.

He has also participated in the premieres of works by major contemporary Cuban composers. His voice and expressiveness make him a highly versatile singer capable of tackling all styles of vocal music.

He served as the baritone soloist for the premiere of Olivier d’Ormesson’s “Requiem” with the ensemble La Tempête, conducted by Simon-Pierre de Camboulas which was released on record in 2015. He is a member of the T&M (Atelier Théâtre et Musique) in Paris, where he joined the ensemble of soloists for the premiere of the opera “Giordano Bruno” by Italian composer Francesco Filidei, with musical direction by Peter Rundel and stage direction by Antoine Gindt.

He is regularly invited with the Pygmalion ensemble (Raphaël Pichon) for Bach cantatas and Passions, as well as the Correspondances ensemble (Sébastien Daucé).

His roles include Giorgio Germont and Barone Douphol in Verdi’s “La Traviata”, Escamillo in Bizet’s “Carmen”, Don Giovanni and Leporello in Mozart’s “Don Giovanni”, and the Captain in Berlioz’s “Lélio”; he has also performed solo parts in Mondonville’s “De Profundis”, Handel’s “Messiah”, Rossini’s “Petite Messe Solennelle”, the Requiems of Fauré, Verdi, and Mozart, Bach’s “Christmas Oratorio” and numerous cantatas (including the roles of Jesus in the “St. John Passion” and “St. Matthew Passion”), and Handel’s “Saul”, among others.

In 2024, with the MPDA company, he performs the roles of Escamillo, a guard, and Carlos in “The Carmen Case” an opera by Diana Soh based on Bizet, with a concept and staging by Alexandra Lacroix and conducted by Lucie Leguay at the Grand Théâtre de Luxembourg and the Bordeaux Auditorium. The production returns on April 3 and 4, 2025, at the Opéra de Limoges.
